The use of robots to assist therapy of neurological motor disfunctions, such as limited mobility, is an emerging research field.This book provides the first systematic application of a haptic control framework and assist as needed training paradigms to so called end-effector based gait simulation interfaces with a natural walking workspace, which fully carry the operator's bodyweight.The developed haptic control framework provides a unified controller architecture and a design method based on robust adaptive control. Thus it allows for the stable interaction with virtual training environments. The modular virtual environments combine a walking scenario with an adjustable assistance along the desired training motion.The framework is the basis to develop and implement compliant and patient-adaptive training strategies and, more generally speaking, haptic interaction on end-effector based gait interfaces.The prototype was successfully implemented and tested on the walking simulator HapticWalker.
The advent of medical imaging and new operating techniques has revolutionized the working methods of medical professionals. This change requires physicians and surgeons to undergo additional training. Hence, the development of appropriate tools, like medical simulators, is of paramount importance. Within this context, this book focuses on physical modeling of soft tissue and collision detection in virtual environments. First, we present various physical models and numerical resolution methods associated with deformable objects. We then propose an alternative model developed for soft tissue simulation. This model, based on Pascal's principle, allows us in a relatively simple way to represent soft tissue. Next, we present various existing algorithms for collision detection, as well as the difficulty in adapting these algorithms in medical simulators. We then present the algorithms developed in our work to deal with this problem. These algorithms have better numerical robustness and are optimized. We apply these methods within the framework of an echographic simulator of the human thigh and a simulator for the arthroscopic reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee.
The NeuroTouch platform is a virtual reality simulator with haptic feedback utilized to assess neurosurgical performance in experimental risk-free environments. Validation of NeuroTouch is critical to the goal of using this simulator in neurosurgical training, evaluation and curriculum development. This study is the first to demonstrate significant differences in neurosurgical bimanual performance of neurosurgical groups based on thecomplexity of simulated tumour. Increasing tumour complexity by changing the colour, increasing density, and decreasing border distinction influenced bimanual performance of the residents more than the neurosurgeons. The main strength of this study is that it has served to develop a group of novel new metrics 24 that provide objective measures of technical skills required to perform a neurosurgical procedure.

Die minimal invasive Chirurgie stellt besondere Anforderungen an die Chirurgen. Deshalb ist ein Simulator-Training wichtig. Für ein effektives Training ist eine automatisierte Beurteilung wesentlich. Deshalb wird hier ein neues, umfassendes Konzept für die automatisierte Bewertung von Fertigkeiten in der minimal invasiven Chirurgie für Virtual Reality Simulatoren vorgestellt. Dabei wird das Bewertungssystem für eine zeitnahe Beurteilung in einer Grid-Umgebung implementiert.

Advances in computer, visual display, motion and force cueing and other technologies in the past two decades have had a dramatic effect on the design and use of simulation technology in aviation and other fields. The effective use of technology in training, safety investigation, engineering and scientific research requires an understanding of its capabilities and limitations. As the technology has as its primary goal the creation of virtual environments for human users, knowledge of human sensory, perceptual, and cognitive functioning is also needed. This book provides a review and analysis of the relevant engineering and science supporting the design and use of advanced flight simulation technologies. It includes chapters reviewing key simulation areas such as visual scene, motion, and sound simulation and a chapter analyzing the role of recreating the pilot's task environment in the overall effectiveness of simulators. The design and use of flight simulation are addressed in chapters on the effectiveness of flight simulators in training and on the role of physical and psychological fidelity in simulator design. The problems inherent in the ground-based simulation of flight are also reviewed as are promising developments in flight simulation technology and the important role flight simulators play in advanced aviation research.
